Who Should Consider a Cochlear Implant?

  • Print
  • Email

If there is any question about qualifying for a cochlear implant, please schedule an introductory visit for an evaluation. We will suggest the most appropriate intervention for your (or your child's) type of hearing loss.

Children

  • Severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss in both ears
  • Use of appropriately fit hearing aids
  • Children who are showing delayed auditory skill development (i.e. not "age appropriate")
  • No medical contraindications
  • High level of motivation and appropriate expectations for performance by parents and child

Adults

  • Predominantly severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss in both ears
  • Struggling with appropriately fit hearing aids
  • No medical contraindications
  • High level of motivation and appropriate expectations for performance
  • There is no upper age limit for cochlear implantation

How to be Successful

After a patient is a confirmed candidate, a surgery date is scheduled. Activation of the cochlear implant typically follows 7-14 days later. To maximize benefit from the cochlear implant, patients should be committed to:

1. Full time use of the equipment
2. Programming appointments
3. Speech and listening therapy
